Toronto Dragon Boat Race Festival

In 1995, Mississauga Chinese Business Association has a team in the Dragon Boat Race. THe have won gold and also silver in the past years. Thru hard work and dedication from the team this year they won the silver medal in their category for 2009 21st. Telus Toronto International Dragon Boat Race festival again. This is a two days event held annually at Toronto Centre Island with thousands of people gather to watch. It took my wife and I, three quarter of an hour waiting in line to get to the ferry to reach the island. This is the first time I have witness such a long queue to for the Toronto Island ferry with the exception of the Chin Festival and Caribana. The line started at the Toronto ferry gate all the way almost to the CN Tower gate. With nice weather and June 21st 2009 being the father day it attracted a much bigger crowds to the island already crowded with participants and theirs supporters.

Expecting a huge crowd turn out both association sent representatives early to the island to pitch thier site along the water way where the race was held. The site were well shaded and perfect to watch the race as thier push toward the finish line. There was plenty of food provided by both associations. Although this is the first time Canadian Pintan Association has a team for the race they managed to win a silver medal in their category too. Congratulation to both M.C.B.A and the Canadian Pintan Association for the medals.

Soaps it Up for Cystic Fibrosis – 2009

Normally, Sam Saccoia and his team at Carstar collision Service would be busy fixing up smashed up cars and trucks but instead they are busy washing cars for the largest carwash in North America in an attempt to set a Guiness World Reocrd for most cars washed! On hand were the Eagle junior soccer rep team from Toronto, Mr. Victor Oh, Vice Chair of SafeCity Mississauga, Peel Police and Peel Fire department to help Sam and his team for this year Soaps it Up! For Cystic Fibrosis at 3575 Hawkestone Road.

Unfortunately, this year Mother Nature wasn’t co-operating with nice weather for the event. Nonetheless, many people still showed up in the rain for the carwash. In total the team washed about seventeen cars. It was a huge success with everyone of us present feeling satisfied and happy. A job well done Sam and the team.

Special thanks for the great support from 11 division, OFFICER RAYMOND LINTON #1923,11 'F' Peel Regional Police, the Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Steve Petrosoniak and his team Doug Hickem, Dave Hills and Craig Wilson.

NEIGHBOURS NIGHT OUT 2009

As a kid growing up in Malaysia I am used to the concept of knowing and being friendly to everyone in my hometown. It is a small community with about two hundred families. All of us knew everyone in the town including all the dogs and cats. I would even know whose cat or dog are having kittens or puppies.

So it was a culture shock when I first came to Canada where neighbor do not know each other. When I bought my first home (low rise condo) we do not know much about our neighbors nor socialize with any of our neighbors. We live in the forth floor and only knew one other family on the floor. He happen to came moved into the same condo and was originally from Malaysia.

Today we live in a nice home in Mississauga and at least know most of my neighbors. Thank in part to one of my neighbor, John who start the neighbor get to know you evening at his backyard. Once a year he will organize a potluck or B.Y.O.B.B.Q. at his place and everyone in the neighborhood is welcome. Unfortunately, when John moved, the party was over.

SafeCity Mississauga under the leadership of chair Mr. Brad Butt and Vice Chair Mr. Victor Oh are starting an organized neighbor night out, and personally, I think every neighborhood in Mississauga should embraced it. On June 16th 2009 at the home of Mr. Brad Butt and 16 other locations in Mississauga, SafeCity Mississauga starts the kick off for the Neighbor Night Out 2009. I was at the main location (Mr. Brad Butt home) for the event and seeing all the neighborhood children out in force enjoying the evening was encouraging. Even the Peel police force send in their finest to participate in the event and mingle with the folks in the community as well as interacting with the children.

One of Brad neighbor Mr. Jack Cole who have lived in that neighborhood for forty years happily asked Brad when is the date for the next Neighbor Night Out. Hopefully I will be out covering the next Neighbor Night out soon. If you or your friend are interested in starting the Neighbor Night Out in your community please contact the SafeCity Mississauga and they will be more than glad to provide you with the proper guide to successful host the program.
