2009 Community Crime Awareness Day

Everyone from all three levels of government claim that they are the one who brought the nice weather for today’s event. However, Mr. Jake Dheer (station manger for Rogers in Mississauga) reminded everyone that it was Mayor Hazel McCallion who has been the source for the nice weather. This year the event was move to the surrounding area of the Living Arts Centre from the usual location around the Mississauga City Hall and the Central Library due to the renovation funded by new federal infrastructure jobs creation program. The new venue was a little too crowded for this event but everyone who attended this year community crime awareness was very accommodating.

Mayor Hazel McCallion thank the Mississauga Chinese Business Association for successfully organizing this year community crime awareness and thank the residences of Mississauga for once again making Mississauga the safest city in Canada since 2000. Mayor also thank all the young volunteers for the day and reminded all that it is the volunteers who are the corner stone for all successful events held in Mississauga. She is especially proud of all the youth in Mississauga for their hard work and readiness to volunteer.

Mississauga Chinese Business Association was very thankful of all the major sponsors for this year event and once again they were able to serve free Chinese foods for lunch to all the attendees. Approximately about 10,000 people attended this year Mississauga Community Crime Awareness day. Once again this year all the youngsters were able to go home with live gold fishes.

Btrust Chinese Supermarket Grand Opening

An apple a day keeps the doctor away but Btrust owner and operator, Mr. Yi Kui He, chose the fresh green apple to symbolize his commitment to the community that his supermarket will maintain the highest standard of freshness for all the groceries sold in his 52,000 sq. foot store.

Btrust held its grand opening at the front entrance of the newly-renovated store in warm and bright sunshine. Peel Police Chief Mike MetCalf, Mr. Stephen Chu (the president of the Mississauga Chinese Business Association), Mr. Victor Oh (the Vice Chair for SafeCity Mississauga), the property management, and the Mr. Jiang Dianchang Vice Consul of the People Republic of China were all present for the opening. After the ribbon cutting, Northern Lion performed their ritual Lion Dance to ensure both prosperity and good luck for the new store.

Btrust took over the management of the former H & H supermarket last year in November and undertook a major renovation to modernize the store. Today, the store’s ultra-modern looks and excellent organization should serve its new customers well. And, although Mississauga is home to numerous large and modern Chinese supermarkets, the newly-renovated Btrust store is a standout. The customers that the new supermarket attracts will benefit not only Btrust, but also all the other shops in the vicinity.

The weatherman forecast rain for Saturday, August 29th 2009 but it was a beautiful sunny afternoon after all. Perfect weather for the Mississauga-based Relaxology Wellness Centre to launch its two newest locations in the city. On hand was the popular 88 year-old Mayor Hazel McCallion to help with the grand opening. Hon. Bob Dechert, Member of Parliament for Erindale was there to personally convey the well wishes of Prime Mister Stephen Harper on this special occasion.

With the economic woe currently being experienced around the world and the stress of the stumbling economy, the concept of relaxation provided by Relaxology must be very effective because they are still expanding despite the challenging circumstances. The two newest locations were officially opened on August 29th 2009 at Golden Square (1777 Central Parkway West) and Mississauga Chinese Centre (888 Dundas Street East). A crowd of friends and customers was on hand to enjoy generous helpings of Chinese food, India samosas and drinks and to watch the traditional lion dance to help usher in good fortune for the business. To help celebrate the grand opening, all services for the day were reduced to half-price and all beauty products were being offered at a 30% discount.
According to Ms. Teresa Hsin, Relaxology founder and general manager, the company is doing extremely well and she is expecting to open her fifth and sixth locations in Mississauga and Brampton, respectively, later this year. Hsin attributes her company’s success to the value customers receive from the services the company provides. Retired NHL player, Mr. Shayne Corson, tried one of the relaxation sessions and said he wished he could have a session every week. Vice Chair, Mr. Victor Oh, from Safe City Mississauga also tried one and felt great relief after only one session and attributes that to the well-trained therapist at the centre.

M.P.P. Peter Fonseca's Annual Free Community BBQ

Pompina the clown, Elmo and Dora entertained the youth. Children bounced around in the bouncy castle, had their faces painted, received crayons and colouring books, got henna tattoos, and enjoyed some buttery popcorn and sweet cotton candy. There were tons of free give-aways; coffee mugs, re-usable grocery bags, pins, fans, and lots of cool prizes for kids. Over 15 community organizations joined Peter at the BBQ to promote and educate the public on important issues such as energy conservation by Enersource, proper hand washing by Peel Health, safe communities by Peel Crime Stoppers, keeping fit with YMCA and so much more. Peter was ecstatic to have such a huge turn-out this year and plans to make next year's bbq bigger and better as he celebrates his 5th anniversary. Mississauga No1. Culture and art Centre

In 1880s Andrew Onderdonk's help consolidated and united Canada with the completion of the railway link from coast to coast. However, in order for him to complete the railway he undertook to bring in 14000 Chinese workers to help him. Out of the 14000 Chinese coolies who work on the railroad almost half of them scarifies their lives to complete the task.

Canadian historical has showed us the important contribution made by Chinese to save the country’s unity and once again Chinese has enriched the country with its culture. Today Canada is blessed with such diversities and enjoy the rich multiculturalism in part due to it immigration policy. The Chinese too has richly added to this mosaic with it diverse cultural dances, arts and food and on Friday August 21st 2009 in Mississauga it is going to get a whole lot better with the inauguration of the Mississauga No.1 Culture and Art centre. On hand for the grand opening and ribbon cutting for the centre were Hon. Bob Dechert Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Erindale, Hon. Harinder Takhar Member of Provicial Parliament and Minister of Government Services for Ontario, Inspector George Koekkoek of Peel Regional Police, Mr. Ou-Yang Yang Sheng President of the PinTan Association of Canada and Mr. Victor Oh Vice Chair of Safe City Mississauga.

After the the official opening the centre put on a show of talent that will be taught in the centre to entertain the crowds.

2009 Amacon Mississauga Rotary Ribfest

A constant flow of delicious BBQ, and a smiling Ms. Rebecca at the counter serving their customer proved to be an award winning combination for Blazing BBQ, our People’s Choice Award winner at the 2009 Amacon Mississauga Rotary Ribfest. Kentucky Smokehouse took home the first place award for the best sauce while Gator BBQ was crowned the 2009 Amacon Mississauga Rotary Ribfest Best Ribs.

Crowds for this year’s Ribfest seemed to enjoy the festival, which offered a great variety of BBQ Chicken, and Ribs available from a wide range of style from hot to mild, dry rub or sauce BBQ. It was a great family fun pack and admission was free although attendees were encouraged to donate at the entrance.

Ms. Diana Chan who works and volunteers at the Living Art Centre attended this year’s Ribfest 3 days in a row and even ordered extra full Dinner BBQ ribs to take home on Friday. She informed me that she is hoping to savor the leftover ribs from today’s lunch on Monday.

Ribfest was well attended all three days with capacity crowds who thoroughly enjoyed this year’s Amacon Mississauga Rotary Ribfest. On Saturday evening, every vendor was busy serving their customers while people in the line waiting to be served kept growing. Apparently, the long lineup helped the undecided to choose the most popular vendor for their meal.

This year’s Amacon Mississauga Rotary Ribfest brought the best of the city’s diversity as people from all ethnic backgrounds came out to enjoy the Ribfest, not to mention the over 500 volunteers who helped. If you missed this year's Ribfest make sure you mark it in your calendar for 2010.

Mississauga Canada Day Celebration

Happy 142nd birthday Canada as thousand crowded at Mississauga City Hall, Living Art Center and the Central Library to celebrate Canada Day. By 12:30pm they were long line at the wall climbing, and definitely where there is free food the line were even longer mainly due to the generosity of our Sikh community and a big thank you to Bhai Ghaniya Association of Canada Inc. The leader of the association told me that their mission statement are as stated by their founding leader Bhai Joginder SIngh Ji Talwara: -

“Exhortation of Guru Gobind Singh, the apostle of, "Treat all Human beings as equal" to Bhai Ghaniya Ji to continue providing medical aid along with serving water to the injured in the battlefield of Anandpur Sahib without any kind of discrimination between friend and foe became the foundation of service to the ailing humanity, some 159 years before the establishment of Red Cross Society. As a result numerous organizations christened after Bhai Ghaniya are now being run in the service of mankind by the Sikhs at the various places throughout the world.”

At 1:00 pm all three level of governments have representatives on the main stage to officially start the Canada day celebration MC by Mr. Jake Dheer. Followed by a short speech from our beloved Mayor Hazel McCallion. Our Mayor thanks all the volunteers for their dedication and hard work making this year celebration a success. She said, “not the Mayor, nor the council can do it without the volunteers and the sponsor” in making this year Canada Day celebration happen. She encouraged all who attended today function to participate in the community by volunteering their time.

At the same token Mr. Jake Dheer challenge everyone in attendance to respect our national anthem and flag. Jake may not be the Canadian idol but he plan to join Mississauga very own Ms. Michelle Madiera singing O’Canada.
This year Canada day committee chair Councillor Carolyn Parish welcome the crowd to this year City Centre Canada day celebration and thank all the sponsor for the generous contribution.
There were so many activities going on that it is impossible to detail them on paper. If you did not attend this year Canada day party you certainly missed a lot. Although the firework were slow to start but what a spectacular firework set to music presented by Metro Food at its best.

Toronto Dragon Boat Race Festival

In 1995, Mississauga Chinese Business Association has a team in the Dragon Boat Race. THe have won gold and also silver in the past years. Thru hard work and dedication from the team this year they won the silver medal in their category for 2009 21st. Telus Toronto International Dragon Boat Race festival again. This is a two days event held annually at Toronto Centre Island with thousands of people gather to watch. It took my wife and I, three quarter of an hour waiting in line to get to the ferry to reach the island. This is the first time I have witness such a long queue to for the Toronto Island ferry with the exception of the Chin Festival and Caribana. The line started at the Toronto ferry gate all the way almost to the CN Tower gate. With nice weather and June 21st 2009 being the father day it attracted a much bigger crowds to the island already crowded with participants and theirs supporters.

Expecting a huge crowd turn out both association sent representatives early to the island to pitch thier site along the water way where the race was held. The site were well shaded and perfect to watch the race as thier push toward the finish line. There was plenty of food provided by both associations. Although this is the first time Canadian Pintan Association has a team for the race they managed to win a silver medal in their category too. Congratulation to both M.C.B.A and the Canadian Pintan Association for the medals.
