2nd Annual Neighbors Night Out

This year SafeCity Mississauga together with the Peel Library jointly organized the 2nd. Annual Neighbors Night Out with thousand of local residences attending at the Courtneypark Library. Superintendent Robert Devolin Officer in charge of 11 Division Peel Regional Police was on hand to greet the residences and to thank them for coming out and making this event a success. SafeCity Vice Chair Mr. Victor Oh thank the volunteer and the sponsor for this event for their contribution in helping the success of the Neighbours Night Out.

Safe City Mississauga is a not for profit organization create by the City of Mississauga with a mandate to lead a common vision concerning community safety and crime prevention in the city. In 2009 the new Neighbours Night Out program was successfully launch to compliments and support the ongoing Safe City Mississauga programs, such as Neighbourhood Watch and the Crossroads Youth Academy.

Neighbours Night out is a street party, encouraging neighbor to gather and meet each other and to increase community awareness about safety in their neighborhood.

Carassauga 2010

      The Malaysian Singaporean Pavilion performing a traditional ethnic Malay wedding ceremony

This year mark the 25th anniversary for Carassauga the large ethno cultural festival in Canada. In the fall of 1985 Mayor Hazel McCallion put up a call to all the ethnic groups in Mississauga to organize a cultural festival in Mississauga to celebrate the cultural diversity here and 10 ethnic groups responded and together started the Carassauga. Not surprisingly it is the largest multi-cultural Festival in Ontario and has been voted by Festivals & Events Ontario as one of the Top 100 Festivals in Ontario.

Mayor Hazel cut short her trip to China with the GTA Chinese Business Associations to ensure her present for the opening ceremony tonight at the Hershey Center. The Honorable Jason Kenny the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism was on hand to shower the visitor Prime Minister’s greeting and his appreciation for the work of the volunteers for this year Carrassauga. Peter Fonseca the Labor Minister of Ontario also delivered Primer Dalton McQuinty message to the residences of Mississauga on the success of this year Carassauga.

With over sixty countries to visit in three days, this weekend will be worth the while to visit Carassauga with your family and to spent some quality family time together.

SQUARE ONE CARASSAUGA KICK-OFF

Today at Mississauga Square One the Carasauga kick off its 25th aniversary celebration multicultralism in Canada.

Carassauga bring together the talented dancers celebrating their proud heritage and ethnicity from India to the Philippines to Germany and more. Starting May 28th 2010 they will be performing all over the city. This is a wonderful opportunity for Mississauga to preview the colourful costumes, festive music and joyful dance from countries around the world.

Mayor Hazel McCallion, who has already made plan with the Confederate GTA Chinese Business Associations to visit China even, cut short her planned visit to be back in time for the official opening of this year Carassauga. In her speech to the crowd at Square One the Mayor encourages everyone in Mississauga to participate in this year Carassauga. On the same token Hon. Peter Fonseca echo his enthusiastic encouragement to the crowd.

Grand opening for Vitoria Career Development Centre in Mississauga

On Saturday May 8th 2010, Mayor Hazel McCallion and provincial Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Hon. Michael Chan warmly welcome the 1st Victoria Career Development Centre in Mississauga. This centre is part of an international Education group with offices in China and Canada. Their vision are:-

Inauguration ceremony and celebration for the Canadian Confederation of Fujian Associations

May 7th 2010

Tonight on the cold spring night at the grand banquet hall at Double Tree Hilton Hotel on 655 Dixon Road , Toronto marked the warm and grand inauguration ceremony of the first confederation of Fujian Associations in Canada . The event was well attended by over a thousand people. Mayor Hazel McCallion of Mississauga congratulated the organization and wished them every success. She congratulated Mr. Auyong the president of Pintan association in Canada who was elected by his peers among the sixteen Fujian Associations in Canada to lead this new organization as president of the Canadian Confederation of Fujian Association. Mr. Bob Dechert, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Erindale, delivered Prime Minister Mr. Stephen Harper’s greetings and congratulations to the Canadian Confederation of Fujian Association for their inauguration celebration.

Canada has always been a golden mountain to Chinese Migrants since the 1875 gold rush. In 1880 the first huge immigration of Chinese flooded the Western Canadian region to help build the national railway linking the Eastern Canada to Port Moody in BC. Chinese railway workers were the main labour force building the section of the Canadian Pacific Railway from the Pacific to Craigellachie the Eagle Pass in British Columbia . During 1871 when British Columbia agreed to join Confederation they demanded that the Dominion government build a railway linking B.C. with eastern Canada within 10 years.

This project set the stage for the first Chinese migration into Canada . Unfortunately, of the fifteen thousand Chinese workers for the Canadian Pacific only half on them survived this dangerous and treacherous construction project.

The early migrants were mainly from Guangdong (广东省 - Simplifies Chinese: 廣東省 – traditional Chinese; Guǎngdōng Shěng-pinyin) a province on the southern coast of the People’s Republic of China . In 1975 when I first arrived in Canada my ability to speak Mandarin was laughed at by the local Chinese and I was called a bamboo shoot because I couldn’t speak the local Cantonese dialect. However, in the past 5 years I have started to see more local Cantonese merchants and businessmen learning Mandarin due to the greater influx of Chinese migrants from China .

Tonight, is a new chapter in the Canadian Chinese history where a dialect other than Cantonese is setting the stage for the newcomers. For that reason a group of Chinese leaders from the Fujian province who have Canadian experience have decided to pool together their resources to form the Canadian Confederation of Fujian Associations in the hope of providing the support and help to these new immigrants. The associations hope to help these new pioneers to integrate into the Canadian Fabric and the Canadian multiculturalism as well as to enrich the Canada with the rich Fujian cultural heritage.

COPs for Cancer

April 10th 2010

On Saturday April 10th, members of the Peel Regional Police Service, family and friends will gather at Centre Court at the Square One Shopping Centre to once again raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer. So far they have help Canadian Cancer Society raised two hundred and twenty five thousand dollars.

Peel Regional police employees have been strong supporters of Cops for Cancer for several years - and for good reason. Many of them have been touched by cancer either personally or through a loved one or friend. Always in our memories are the members of the Peel police family who have been taken from everyone far too soon by this horrible disease.

Unfortunately cancer had affected almost everyone in one way or another and this year Swiss Chalet on 4555 Hurontario Street, Unit #1 were there to support the cause. The team had so far raised $500.00 but according the General Manager Mr. Valdo Melo they are still counting on more to come.

Mississauga going FIT

Today at 755 Queensway East the Mayor of Mississauga Hazel McCallion and Hon. Peter Fonseca M.P.P. Mississauga East - Cooksville jointly announce the new Ontario initiative to go green. "If you want a green Ontario you will have to pay for it" said Mayor Hazel McCallion, "The day will come when every house in the community will have a solar panel on its roof.
