Newcomer Centre of Peel Chinese New Year Celebration

Newcomer Centre of Peel (NCP) began as a Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program and Childcare service about twenty years ago. Today, NCP is the leader in settlement and integration services within the Region of Peel supporting newcomer families in their settlement process.

Newcomer Centre of Peel is a non-profit organization offering complimentary services to help newcomers moving to Peel and to promote a strong diversity as well as cultural collaboration and enhancement.

Newcomer Centre of Peel currently provide services in over 30 different languages and proudly embrace all diversity and multiculturalism.

Not surprising today Newcomer Centre of Peel as part of their program welcome the Golden Tiger into Peel at T.L Kennedy Secondary School to a capacity crowd. Together Ms Effat Ghassemi (Exec. Dir of NCP)  and Mr. Victor Oh (Vice Chair SafeCity Mississauga) officially declare today event and greeted the guest and wishes them a happy and properous Chines New Year.

This year the ceremony were conducted in English, Chinese and Korean because the Korean and Chinese celebrate their New Year on the same day.

RBC Invites Mississauga to Ring in Year of the Tiger

Today members of the Mississauga community were invited to celebrate Chinese New Year at Royal Bank of Canada at Eglinton and Creditview branch. Ms. Tammi Lisson, RBC’s Regional Vice President, Mississauga welcome the crowd at the branch and thank them for their continuing support.

Than the Northern Lions dance their way around the branch to usher in the fresh good fortune for the coming year.

Chinese New Year celebration gives roaring start to festive Misissauga at City Hall for 2010

One of the most ancient civilizations in the world is that of the Chinese. The arrival of every Chinese lunar New Year, mean one fifth of the world population will look forward as to what the New Year has in store for them. Traditionally the Chinese believes, somehow, their lives would be influenced depending on their animal signs.

This year the Golden Tiger will roar it’s way into our lunar calendar and the next time the Golden Tiger come it will be 2070. Officially the Chinese New Year arrived on February 14th 2010 Valentines Day!

According to Chinese astrology, the Tiger is said to be lucky vivid, lively and engaging, as well as incredible bravery, evidenced in his willingness to engage in battle or his undying courage. According to traditional Chinese believe having a Tiger in the house is the best protection against the evils of fire, and burglary. However, beware of marry a women born in the year of Tiger.

Every year the Mississauga Chinese Business Association celebrate the Chinese New Year with Mayor and City Councilors at the great Hall in the City Hall on the first day of the Chinese New Year but unfortunately this year it happen on Sunday and Monday was family day so it was schedule to Tuesday February 16th 2010. Nonetheless, many Mississauga residences were on hand to celebrate the festivity.

Every year all three levels of governments were on hand to help celebrate this auspicious day at the Main Hall in Mississauga City Hall. Unfortunately this year, no provincial member of parliament were able to atttended the function. Mayor Hazel McCallion even in her busy schedule and councillor Ms. Pat Saito from Ward 9 made time to show their respect for the Chinese community by joining the crowd gathering at the main hall of this great city in Mississauga to celebrate their New Year. At the same time the community is grateful to M.P. Mr. Bob Dechert, Mississauga-Erindale, M.P. Ms. Bonnie Crombie Mississauga-Streetsville and M.P. Mr. Nadeep Singh Bain, Mississauga-Brampton South for making available their time in their busy schedule to celebrate with the Chinese community their New Year.

Chinese New Year at Fo Guang Shan Temple

While most Chinese in the Mississauga are business celebrating Chinese New Year eve with family members, a huge crowd is also gathering at the Fo Guang Shan Temple in Mississauga on 6525 Millcreek Drive, Mississauga to celebrate the coming of the golden Tiger lunar New Year. Every year on Chinese New Year eve the temple open its door to the thousand of worshippers coming to the temple to prayer for blessing for the coming year.

This year Councilor Pat Saito from Ward 9 and MPP Mr. Bob Delaney, Mississauga, Streetsville were on hand to help the temple celebrate the coming of the Chinese New Year. Mr. Kuo-Jan Wang who is the current Director General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto was also at the temple to usher the Chinese New Year.

Citizenship Court Febuary 10th 2010

Febuary 10th 2010.

As I drove over the freshly covered snow on the road to the Citizenship court I cannot help but felt bewildered by the majesty and beauty Canada has to offer to me. However, just imagine if you are one of the hundred and sixth new Canadians receiving your Citizenship today in the Citizenship court presided by Hon. Judge Mina Fung, what would your thought be.

As early as 8.00o’clock this morning the crowd has gathered outside the door to the court waiting to enter the chamber. I can sense their excitement as the waited inline to register themselves with the court clerks.

Hon Judge Mina Fung greeted the crowd at the beginning of the ceremony welcoming them as new citizen of Canada and reminded them that February (Black History Month Canada) is the month for black heritage and their contribution to Canada.
After the official ceremony has concluded Mr. Victor Oh the Vice Chair of SafeCity Mississauga spoke to the new Canadian encouraging them to contribute to the mosaic of the Canadian society by donating the free time to volunteer in the community.

Haiti Fundraising Concert

In three week’s time, the organizer worked hard to prepare for the Haiti Fundraising concert at Mississauga Chinese Baptist Church located at 5220 Creekbank Road, Mississauga.

Fundraising for disaster is becoming an important initiative for the Mississauga Chinese Baptist Church. This is the second time the church has teamed up with World Vision Canada to take up the challenge to raise funds for the Haiti disaster. Two years ago the church worked with World Vision Canada to raise funds for the earthquake victims in China.

Audiences were entertained by Les Belles Classiques Ensemble from Cawthra Park Secondary School under the leadership of Ms. Sherri Collins (head of the music department), Master Rashaan Allwood, also a student from Cawthra Park Secondary School and a four-time Royal Conservatory of Music Silver Medallist. Mr. & Mrs. Eddie & Iris Huang from Toronto also came to perform two heart-warming songs. The church’s youth orchestra and youth singers also performed.

Tonight more than 350 peoples attended the concert and more than sixteen thousand dollars were raised for the disaster. Combining with the church commitment to the Haiti disaster and earlier church fundraising effort a total of twenty five thousand dollars were raised for World Vision’s Haiti Disaster Relief, all in just three weeks.

Jennyne Mayard, Leader of the Haitian Community in Mississauga shared with us that she lost 12 relatives in Port-au-Prince. She encouraged us to continue to support the people in Haiti as well as those Haitian in Mississauga and Toronto. Almost all of Haitian in Mississauga and Toronto lost family members due to this disaster. The Haitian community in Toronto is totally disarrayed.

OWHA - Team China Series - Game#27 0f 27

February 4th 2010 8:00 P.M.

Tonight Team China will played their final pre-Olympic training games in Richmond Hill against Toronto Aeros of the Provincial Women's Hockey Leaaque (PWHL) before heading to the Olympic in Vancouver. This is the second time these two teams have face each other on ice. On their first game Team China loss to the Toronto Aeros 2 to 4. Currently The Toronto Aeros ranked second behind The Mississauga Chief in the Provincial Women's Hockey Leaque (PWHL) with twenty six wins and two losses.

China ranked seventh in the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) ranking. Their new Finish head coach Mr. Hannu Juhani Saintula has only a small pool of about 150 players in the country to work with but hope that Team China will capture the sixth place in this year Olympic.

Once again althought China have a strong game during the first period with a 1 to 1 tie, but ultimately losing to the Toronto team 4 to 1.
